Black Forest Labs has launched FLUX 3 Image, the image variant of its FLUX 3 family, in an announcement thread pitched as "control every pixel." The model makes multi-turn edits without changing any other pixel, lets users lay out an image with bounding boxes, generates in up to 4K, and composes an image from up to 10 references. Details are on the model page.
What it adds
- Pixel-preserving edits. Each turn of a multi-turn edit changes only what was asked for. Everything else in the image stays identical, which is what makes iterating on a single image practical.
- Bounding-box layout. The launch demo is a poster titled "ZERO GRAVITY" with a pair of red rain boots and several blocks of text. Every element carries a labeled box (boots_1, En_Text_1, En_Text_2), so the user decides where each object and each line of copy goes instead of hoping a prompt lands them there.
- Up to 4K. Native high-resolution generation, which BFL says preserves detail.
- Up to 10 references. Several reference images can be combined into one composition.
FLUX 3 Image is the third variant of the family announced on July 23 alongside FLUX 3 Video and FLUX 3 Action, when image was promised for "the coming weeks" (see the July FLUX 3 post). FLUX 3 Video went live on fal, Replicate (early access) and Krea in early August. On the image side, Datapoint's image Elo table had GPT Image 2 (1131), Seedream 5.0 Pro (1127) and Nano Banana 2 (1122) leading in August, all closed models, and FLUX 3 Image has no arena score yet.
Weights
BFL is shipping two tiers. Commercial Weights are available now for companies running image generation at scale. The Open Weights version of FLUX 3 Image is launching in the coming weeks, which delivers on the open-weight versions BFL promised in July for later this year.
The distinction matters, because "open" covers a wide range of grants, as the field guide to AI model licences lays out. The precedent is FLUX.2 [dev], released under a non-commercial licence with a separate commercial licence reportedly required for self-hosting. This time the commercial and open tiers are announced together.
